Île aux Cerfs Golf is located on an island off Trou d’Eau Douce, in the Flacq district. Bernhard Langer designed this championship par-72 course, spread across 38 hectares of tropical vegetation, volcanic rocks and white sand. The island has no road access: it can be reached by boat shuttle from the east coast or by helicopter. Our concierges at Legend Hill arrange tee times and transfers. Here is an overview of the course, how to reach it and the club’s etiquette.

A Bernhard Langer par-72 course across 38 hectares

The course occupies the southern half of the island, with its 18 holes winding between volcanic rocks, native trees and natural ponds. According to the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, the course’s nine ponds shape the game and require players to make club-selection decisions at every water crossing. The large waste bunkers, meanwhile, create striking contrasts with the surrounding vegetation.

Salam Seashore Paspalum grass, highly resistant to tropical climates, covers all playing surfaces. Modernisation work was carried out on the front nine in 2013, followed by improvements to the back nine from June 2014, with a clear objective: to make the course more accessible without taking away its challenge. The club now claims a place among the 15 most beautiful golf courses in the world, while Colin Montgomerie sums it up simply: “must play”.

◆ Our observations

The scenery changes with every hole, but two sections particularly stand out for our golfing guests. First, the stretches along the lagoon, where the easterly wind calls for a rethink of every approach shot. Then the climb towards the island’s highest point, which opens up a panoramic view of the entire lagoon. The ponds and waste bunkers add rhythm to the course and make you want to come back for another round.

Reaching the course from Pointe Maurice

The public Pointe Maurice jetty is the departure point for Île aux Cerfs Golf. A 24-seat boat operates the crossing every 20 minutes, from 6:40 am to 5:30 pm, between the mainland and the club’s landing point. A secure, CCTV-monitored car park is available for visitors.

The green fee includes the boat transfer, making it easier to organise your day. Air Mauritius also offers helicopter transfers on request for those who would like to discover the lagoon from above before playing. This dual access explains what makes this golf club so unique: it can be reached by sea or by air, but never by road.

Preparing for your round on this championship course

The club welcomes both visitors and members. Each hole has at least four tee markers, allowing players to choose the length that best suits their level of play.

The 4 sets of tees

The difference between the most forward and the furthest-back tees is almost 2,000 metres.

  • The Langer tees measure 6,452 metres, or 7,056 yards, with a slope rating of 155, the maximum on the USGA scale.
  • The Championship tees cover 5,944 metres, with a slope rating of 142.
  • The Tournament tees reduce the course to 5,242 metres, with a slope rating of 124.
  • The Forward tees measure 4,536 metres, with a slope rating of 129 based on the ladies’ rating.

Tee times and dress code

The first tee time for 18 holes is at 7:30 am, while twilight rounds are available from 3 pm. In terms of dress code, the club requires golf shoes with soft spikes, collared polo shirts, tailored trousers or Bermuda shorts. Jeans, beachwear, tennis clothing and trainers are not permitted anywhere on the course.

Playing Île aux Cerfs from the west coast

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by road between Rivière Noire and the Pointe Maurice jetty, covering around 66 km via the A3. This journey crosses Mauritius from west to east, so an early start is necessary if you are aiming for the first 7:30 am tee time. Our concierges arrange the transfer the day before and plan the return journey for mid-afternoon.

From our Legend Hill estate, perched on the heights of La Tourelle, this day naturally lends itself to a late lunch on your return, followed by some time at the spa. Guests playing two courses during their stay generally keep the east coast round for the middle of their holiday, and pair it with one of the other layouts covered in our guide to golf in Mauritius.

◆ A word from our concierge team

As the course is reached by boat, we schedule arrival at Pointe Maurice 40 minutes before the tee-off. This gives enough time to catch the shuttle without rushing and ensures the round starts on time.
