Golf in Mauritius can be enjoyed year-round on around a dozen 18-hole courses, spread between beaches, volcanic mountains and tea-covered highlands. International architects have designed championship layouts here, often with a par of 72. Mauritius is one of the Indian Ocean’s most popular golfing destinations, and its reputation is based on three key advantages. First, the climate: courses remain playable year-round, with particularly pleasant conditions during the dry season from May to October. Then there is the density: around a dozen 18-hole courses across an island just 65 km long, making it possible to enjoy several rounds during the same stay without spending hours on the road.
Finally, there is the quality of the layouts. Renowned designers such as Rodney Wright, Peter Matkovich, Bernhard Langer and Ernie Els have created championship courses here. Each golf course blends into a different setting: beachfront, mountain foothills or highlands at an altitude of 400 metres. This variety of landscapes turns every round into a different experience.
The west coast is the island’s driest region, a genuine advantage when planning several rounds. Tamarina Golf Club offers an 18-hole par-72 course, open since 2006 and designed by architect Rodney Wright. The course lies in the Black River district, between Rempart Mountain and Tamarin Bay.
The layout alternates between fairways overlooking the Indian Ocean and corridors bordered by dry vegetation, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. On the west coast, the breeze generally picks up in the middle of the morning. Our golfing guests therefore tend to tee off early, then return for lunch overlooking the lagoon before enjoying a visit to the spa. Mont Choisy Le Golf opened its 18-hole course in 2017, designed by South African architect Peter Matkovich. This par 72 unfolds across a volcanic landscape and is the leading championship course in the north of the island, a few minutes from the beaches of Grand Baie.
Avalon Golf Estate sits in the highlands of the south-central region, 400 metres above the Indian Ocean. Opened in December 2015 and also designed by Peter Matkovich, it incorporates the island’s volcanic landscape into its layout, among the tea plantations surrounding the Bois Chéri estate, one of the stops on the Mauritius tea route.
The east coast is home to some of the most talked-about golf courses in Mauritius, including layouts designed by Bernhard Langer and Ernie Els. Golfers play beside the lagoon, sometimes on an island reached by shuttle boat.
The Le Morne peninsula offers fairways overlooking the UNESCO-listed mountain. Further east, Bel Ombre saw the opening in December 2023 of La Réserve Golf Links, designed by Peter Matkovich with South African champion Louis Oosthuizen, who went on to win the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on his own layout three weeks after it opened. The course borders the Black River Gorges – Bel Ombre Biosphere Reserve, which also takes in Black River Gorges National Park.
Golf in Mauritius did not begin in the 2000s. In the centre of the island, at Vacoas, the Gymkhana Club has welcomed players since 1844. Created by the British Royal Navy for its officers stationed on the island, it is one of the oldest courses in the southern hemisphere and is still in play today.
The peak golfing season corresponds to the austral winter, from May to October: dry weather, fast greens and temperatures of around 25°C. It coincides with the best time to visit Mauritius. By contrast, the austral summer brings more showers and humidity, particularly from January to March. Before booking your tee time, keep these practical points in mind:

Method: the list of courses, regions and course designers was taken from the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, the details of Tamarina were confirmed on the club's own site, the opening of La Réserve Golf Links was verified with Heritage Golf Club, the seasons and rainfall come from the Mauritius Meteorological Services, and the planning advice was supplied by the Legend Hill team, verified in September 2026. Green fee structures change with the season and the club: we do not publish rates, our concierge team advises case by case.
Sunny Malliah started out as a receptionist in Mauritian hospitality in 2003 and now heads the rooms division at Legend Hill: front office, concierge, reservations and housekeeping.
