The Seven Cascades hike in Mauritius follows the Tamarin River above the village of Henrietta. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the half-day version, or around 5 hours 30 for the full loop that links every waterfall and its natural pool. The Seven Cascades stretch along the Tamarin River in the highlands of western Mauritius, near Black River Gorges National Park. The river originates around Mare aux Vacoas, the country’s largest reservoir, before flowing towards the coast through a succession of waterfalls and natural pools.
The local name, Cascades de Tamarin, sits alongside the English name Tamarind Falls. Each waterfall forms a turquoise pool at the foot of basalt rocks, surrounded by dense vegetation where the trees filter the sunlight. The site actually holds far more than seven: past the first few, walkers stop counting. It attracts photography and wild-swimming enthusiasts, drawn by its unspoilt natural setting an hour’s drive from Port Louis.
The hike starts near Henrietta, where guides welcome visitors in the early morning. The trail initially winds through forest on soft ground before reaching the riverbed. From there, the route alternates between dirt paths, basalt slabs and river crossings.
Two formats exist, and the choice changes everything. The half-day outing takes 3 to 4 hours over roughly 5 km and takes in 4 or 5 waterfalls. The full loop covers 5.6 km with 350 metres of elevation gain and calls for close to 5 hours 30 of walking: the Randopitons trail description rates it difficult, with short but steep slopes and drops that can bring on vertigo.
The waterfalls appear one after another, each with its own pool. The final climb requires one last effort, particularly in the often-heavy heat. From the upper section of the trail, panoramic views over the valley provide a rewarding finish. The most spectacular waterfalls are best admired in the late morning, when sunlight filters through the trees.
The path is not waymarked in the usual sense: a few strips of red cloth tied to branches and dabs of paint mark the way, and it is best to stay close to the river so as not to lose the route. A guide is not compulsory, but nearly all our guests take one: they know which pools are safe to swim in depending on the day’s water flow. Bring a microfibre towel and a dry bag, as photography equipment quickly suffers from the spray.
The dry season, from May to October, offers the best conditions: moderate water flow, less slippery rocks and clearer views across the valley. It coincides with the best time to visit Mauritius. Chamarel Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Mauritius, with a drop of 83 metres. It is fed by three streams that come together in the Saint-Denis and Viande Salée rivers, and it can be admired from a specially designed viewpoint.
Near Souillac, Rochester Falls creates a curtain of water over basalt columns shaped into distinctive right angles. This geological curiosity can be reached via a track followed by a short walk.
In the heart of Black River Gorges National Park, the Alexandra Falls viewpoint opens onto the valley, endemic flora and the Indian Ocean. The site is accessible by car, making it an ideal stop between two hikes. Further west, the underwater waterfall illusion off Le Morne Brabant provides another spectacular experience from the sea.
