In northern Mauritius, just a few minutes from Port Louis, Pamplemousses Garden covers 37 hectares and is home to the oldest botanical collection in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, you can see giant water lilies capable of supporting the weight of a child, an avenue of royal palms and nearly 650 varieties of plants from around the world. Today known as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, the site also tells three centuries of Mauritian history in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Pamplemousses Garden began as a simple kitchen garden. In 1735, Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais acquired the Mon Plaisir Estate to supply Port Louis and ships sailing to India.
Everything changed in 1767, when the intendant and botanist Pierre Poivre created a true botanical garden there. He acclimatised more than 650 species from around the world and introduced valuable spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves in an attempt to break the Dutch monopoly.
In 1988, the site became the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, in honour of the father of Mauritian independence, whose Samadhi is located within the grounds.
Pierre Poivre’s name is far from coincidental. This botanist risked his reputation by secretly bringing in spice plants coveted by all the colonial powers. The estate you explore in Mauritius is a direct continuation of this scientific and commercial adventure, which began more than 250 years ago in the heart of the Indian Ocean.
The site can be explored like a living museum, with every pathway revealing a remarkable species. Three areas are particularly noteworthy.
The Victoria amazonica water lilies are the garden’s star attraction. Growing in a rectangular pond, their circular leaves can reach nearly 3 metres in diameter and support the weight of a young child. Native to the Amazon, these aquatic plants produce nocturnal flowers that change colour over two nights, from white to pink.
As soon as you enter, a long avenue of royal palms creates the garden’s most photographed vista. You will also encounter the talipot palm, a tree that flowers only once after several decades, before dying. It can reach 25 metres in height and produces one of the largest inflorescences in the plant kingdom.
Near Château de Mon Plaisir, a restored colonial residence, an enclosure is home to Seychelles giant tortoises. The historic building houses a small museum tracing the history of the estate. Around it, centuries-old mango trees and tropical species create an inviting setting for a shady break between discoveries of rare plants.
Arrive as soon as the garden opens, around 8:30 a.m.: the morning light enhances the beauty of the main pond, while the cooler temperatures make the walk much more enjoyable. We recommend taking a guide at the entrance, as many trees are not labelled and their stories are well worth discovering.
