The Land of 23 Colours is the signature attraction of Vallée des Couleurs. These rolling dunes display up to 23 distinct shades, ranging from brick red and purple to deep blue and soft green. Their origins date back several million years, following volcanic activity associated with the Bassin Blanc area. Basalt rock, gradually transformed through erosion and the oxidation of minerals, gave rise to this unique palette of colours. Remarkably, these different shades never mix, even during heavy tropical rainfall.
A landscaped trail leads to viewpoints where the colours change depending on the daylight. Do not confuse this site with the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel, further north on the west coast: the geology is the same, but the palette here is far wider. The park also lies just south of Black River Gorges National Park, making it easy to combine the two during one stay.
