Mauritian encounters: a conversation with Eva Naidu, General Manager of Legend Hill

What makes us miss a place before we have even left?

At the helm of Legend Hill, Eva Naidu embodies a style of hospitality that is attentive, intuitive and deeply human. As General Manager, she shapes the guest experience around a simple belief: our most precious memories are often born from a detail, a thoughtful gesture or a moment we never expected.

Her story with Mauritius began long before Legend Hill. The daughter of a Mauritian father, she spent part of her childhood on the island and has always maintained strong family ties here, while her own path led her to live in France, Spain and Italy, before travelling extensively around the world. Those years abroad, and the journeys that followed, shaped her perspective without ever breaking the thread that connected her to the island.

Returning to live in Mauritius today therefore carries a particular meaning: it is neither quite a return, nor entirely a new beginning. It is the rediscovery of somewhere deeply familiar, through the eyes of someone who has also learned to see it from afar.

Perhaps this is how certain places become precious: through what they give us while we are there, but also through the place they continue to hold within us when we are far away.

With Eva, we wanted to understand what makes Mauritius one of those places we leave without ever quite leaving behind.

Mauritius in one colour?
Blue. Or rather, the blues: the clarity of the lagoon, the depth of the ocean and all the shades that change with the passing hours.

Mauritius in one scent?
Frangipani. A warm, delicate and familiar fragrance that I immediately associate with gardens, sunshine and that distinctive Mauritian way of life.

Mauritius in one sound?
The sound of the waves. It is a sound I immediately associate with Mauritius. At Legend Hill, even when you cannot hear the ocean, it is always there on the horizon. You only have to look up to find it again.

Mauritius in one word?
Cultural diversity. Because it is perhaps what defines the island best: its cultures, languages, cuisines, religions, stories… Everything comes together to create something that could only exist here.

You grew up between several cultures while maintaining a deep connection with Mauritius. What does the island still awaken in you today?

I have always had one foot here and one foot elsewhere. Perhaps that has taught me to see Mauritius from two perspectives: as someone who knows it intimately, but also as someone who continues to rediscover it.

Whenever I return to the island, certain things still affect me in exactly the same way. The light, the vegetation, the sea… but also the people, and that very Mauritian ease with which connections are formed.

There is a familiarity here that I recognise immediately. Something that reminds me that, even after living elsewhere, a part of me never truly left Mauritius.

What do people come to Mauritius to find that they cannot find anywhere else?

Of course, people come for the beauty of the island. But Mauritius has a way of surprising you with everything the journey never promised.

An extraordinary diversity coexists within such a small territory. In the space of just a few kilometres, the atmosphere can change completely. Several languages may mingle within a single conversation; cuisines, traditions, beliefs and stories constantly cross paths.

But perhaps what moves me most is the human warmth. Mauritians have a very natural way of welcoming people, of sharing and creating a sense of connection.

This is something we have also chosen to place at the heart of Legend Hill, with an entirely Mauritian team. Because the hospitality of a place is not defined only by what has been imagined for it: it is shaped above all by the people who bring it to life every day. For me, staying in Mauritius also means having the privilege of being welcomed by those who know the island, live it and can tell its story in their own way.

Perhaps that is where the singularity of Mauritius truly lies: in the meeting between the beauty of the island and the generosity of the people who call it home.

Sometimes we remember an act of kindness, an emotion or a single moment more vividly than the place itself. What would you like every guest to take away from Legend Hill?

More than anything, I would like them to remember how they felt here.

Of course, they may remember the view of Le Morne, a dinner, a sunset or a moment at the spa. But what truly matters to me is that every guest feels they have been seen as a person, never simply as a room number.

At Legend Hill, we try to get to know our guests, their habits, their wishes and sometimes even those little details they never needed to express. It is often in the details we barely think about that our attachment to a place begins.

And if, by the time they leave, the thought of returning has already found its way into their mind, then perhaps we have achieved something meaningful.

Luxury is often associated with what we can see. Where do you believe it truly lies?

For me, true luxury often begins where the eye does not go.

It lies in the time we give someone, in anticipating a need before it is even expressed, in the availability of a team. In the kind of attention that appears effortless, while behind the scenes it rests upon countless thoughtful gestures.

A place can impress at first sight. But that is not necessarily what leaves the deepest impression.

Luxury is being able to slow down. To feel expected, recognised. And to experience that rare sensation that, for a few days, everything simply falls into place.

That sense of effortless simplicity is, in reality, built on constant attention and a genuine commitment to every detail. It is something we cultivate every day at Legend Hill.

If you could offer a traveller just one moment to experience in Mauritius, what would it be?

Without hesitation, the end of the day at Santosha.

Sitting opposite Le Morne with a signature cocktail in hand, watching the sun slowly descend towards the ocean as the sky transforms minute by minute.

It is such a simple moment. And yet everything I love about Mauritius seems to come together there: the beauty of the landscape, the softness of the air, the slowing of the pace and, for a few moments, that feeling of no longer needing to be anywhere else.

It is also one of my favourite moments at Legend Hill: that in-between hour when the day lingers a little longer before giving way to the evening.
