In fifteen years welcoming guests on the west coast, one question comes up every week at the concierge desk: “where do I start?” Here is the itinerary we genuinely recommend, ranked by lived experience and checked against official Mauritian sources.
This emblematic mountain has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, in memory of the runaway slaves who took refuge there. The climb takes 3 to 4 hours return; the final, steep section is only accessible with an approved guide.
We send our guests off at 6:30 am: the light is low, the trail still cool, and you come back down before the crowds. Bring proper hiking shoes — flip-flops won’t make it past the rocky part.
Tamarin bay is home to spinner dolphins, best observed at dawn. The activity is governed by an official approach charter limiting distance and the number of boats. We only work with operators who have signed this charter.
Le Morne’s lagoon is one of the most renowned kitesurf spots in the Indian Ocean, thanks to the steady trade winds of the austral winter. For families, the shallow waters on the Black River side offer snorkelling accessible from a very young age.

The region’s dining scene has risen to an international level. Within the resort, the signature table Le 1812 is designed by Glenn Viel, a three-Michelin-star chef. In the village, Black River keeps its fresh-fish tables and authentic Creole addresses that we gladly recommend.
The west coast is the “leeward” side: drier and sunnier than the east. Here are the averages recorded by the Mauritian weather services.
